The resort experience is designed to feel relaxed, comfortable, and easy to settle into. Guests move between shared lodge spaces, private tents, and the landscape beyond, with each part of the property supporting the pace of the week.
Some moments are quiet and restorative. Others are social and full of conversation. Together, they create a stay that feels well considered without ever feeling overstructured.
The two lodges offer distinct atmospheres. Lakeside feels closer to the water and more social in rhythm, while Mountainview offers a quieter setting with broader views and a stronger focus on wellness.
Meals, drinks, and downtime all unfold naturally within these shared spaces, while private tents remain a place to step away and rest.
Across the property, guests can expect a balance of comfort and ease: shared dining, bars, pools, fireside evenings, wellness amenities, and moments that feel shaped by the setting rather than staged around it.
Dining at Hippo Lakes is designed to be generous, comfortable, and easy. All safari packages include meals prepared by the on-site culinary team and served in shared lodge spaces throughout the week. The approach is relaxed and welcoming, with menus influenced by South African cuisine alongside familiar favorites.
Meals are typically enjoyed together in the lodges, with seating that encourages connection while still allowing space and ease. Private dining requests can be accommodated when possible, though dining at Hippo Lakes is intentionally communal in spirit.
All guests enjoy complimentary drip coffee at breakfast, along with tea, bottled water, and fresh tropical juices throughout their stay. Each tent is also stocked with a French press and ground coffee for mornings at your own pace.
Hippo Lakes takes pride in an exceptional wine selection, with a curated cellar that complements the quality of every meal.
Classic Safari guests receive two house drinks per day including soft drinks, beer, and wine. Signature Safari guests have open access to house drinks throughout their stay. Premium wines and spirits are available à la carte.
The spa experience at Hippo Lakes is designed to complement the safari, not compete with it. It offers guests a quieter kind of restoration between drives, with treatments that support the slower rhythm of the week.
Spa services are available at Mountainview Lodge, alongside the wood-fired sauna and wellness center.
Treatments are scheduled with the Lodge Manager during your stay, so guests are encouraged to arrange their preferred time while on site.
It is almost impossible to describe Hippo Lakes in words. Everything about the property is luxurious and magical. Before visiting, someone described it to me as “Heaven on Earth” and they didn’t oversell it one bit! The accommodations are first-class, the animals are incredible, and the food is second to none. But what makes Hippo Lakes unlike any other place is the people. We felt like family on the first day. Everyone strives to make your experience extraordinary and serve you like royalty. I rarely leave reviews for anything, much less ALL 5 Stars. But, Hippo Lakes deserves this and more. In 20 years of marriage, this is truthfully the FIRST vacation my wife wasn’t ready to get home from. That says it all!!

EXCELLENT Based on 170 reviews Posted on LynnythTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had such an incredible stay! What truly made the experience unforgettable was the staff (Abraham, Mj, Shinade, everyone!) they were absolutely amazing. Everyone was so warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. You can really feel how much they care about the guests, always going the extra mile to make sure everything is perfect. It's rare to come across a team that's this dedicated and passionate about what they do. Definitely a place l'd come back to, not just for the beautiful surroundings, but for the people who made it all so special. I have been on many Safaris in several countries and the guides for the group were the best I have experienced anywhere! Expert knowledge from mammals to birds, to plants and even insects and they focused on what the group was interested in. Also had some unique animal experiences that were fantastic and unexpected. The rooms were top notch, and luxurious. With our son, we were in a 2 bedroom on the water, great viewing right from the deck! Ours had a wood fired hot tub and a plunge type pool! The food was great! Service was really excellent.Posted on Pat GilissenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our experience was exciting and turned from a vacation to an adventure. the staff was great and the weather had been terrible before we arrived with 9 inch of rain falling which altered the staff plans for us a bit, but was handled with professionalism and if we did not know any different we would have thought this was a normal trip. Our ranger Shaun was so knowledgeable and we saw so many beautiful animals. We felt very safe and safety was always stressed. Our drivers Shaun and Elisa were always careful. We saw things other people had not seen. We would highly recommend this trip, and we are in our mid 70's. The trip was very do-able. The staff is very accommodating. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel so welcome. There is something really special about Hippo Lakes - not just the beauty of the setting, but the atmosphere the team have created. It genuinely felt like being welcomed into a family. Everyone was so warm, attentive and eager to get to know us, which made the experience feel personal in the best possible way. Our week was filled with lots of amazing animals, beautiful scenery and unforgettable moments. We did the two excursions to the big 5 parks which were incredible, we enjoyed a helicopter ride over the safari park, enjoyed amazing massages in between game drives and just overall had the best time. The staff were exceptional across the board. Sean, our ranger for the week, was absolutely brilliant. His knowledge, energy and enthusiasm on every drive were infectious. Every day felt uplifting and exciting because of him, and I truly couldn't have asked for a better guide. Anton was also wonderful - so charming and thoughtful, and along with Sinead, made sure we were incredibly well looked after. The food was another highlight - we were so well fed (perhaps too well fed!) and the kitchen team did an amazing job throughout. Titus looked after us so brilliantly during meals. The lodge itself is just stunning. The tents were an absolute dream - so comfortable, beautifully designed, and incredibly well stocked. Waking up in that setting each day felt like such a luxury. The grounds were immaculate, and every detail was clearly so well thought out. I couldn’t recommend Hippo Lakes enough for an unforgettable safari experience!Posted on Frank WTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Accommodations are bespoke, and services are just so intentional and personal. They say you arrive as a guest and leave as family, and it is 100% true.Posted on Jamie Jo JohnsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hippo Lakes was the most amazing week of our lives! The accommodations were beyond perfect, the food was fantastic, the staff was kind, selfless, and accommodating, and the game drives were abundant with animals! Nothing was lacking, and my expectations were exceeded at every moment! I would recommend this trip for couples traveling alone or for couples traveling with friends. It is ten out of ten, five stars, two enthusiastic thumbs up! GO!!! It will be the trip of a lifetime, and the memories made will never fade! The lodge is located in the Waterburg area of South Africa, and it is breathtaking. The facilities and atmosphere of Hippo Lakes resort are clean, peaceful, first-class, and welcoming. The rooms (tents) are HUGE, and they have everything you need! There are so many "gifts" upon arriving at your room, including food and drinks, with daily cleaning and nightly turn-down service. It is immaculate! The value of this experience is incomparable. For what you are getting on this safari, I would have expected to pay more than twice what the cost is. Aside from the amenities and service and safari, the opportunity to get away from everything into the peace and quiet of the property is the best part. It is quiet and slow, and you feel so free to put your phone away and relax--to really be on vacation for a week. There isn't a price tag you can put on that! Go to Hippo Lakes! Bring your friends! You will not regret it!!!
