At Hippo Lakes Luxury Safari, every day brings new opportunities for adventure, wonder, and connection with Africa’s wildlife and landscapes.
Each stay follows a five-night safari rhythm designed to feel both structured and relaxed. Guests explore the reserve on guided game drives led by experienced rangers who know the terrain, animal behavior, and seasonal patterns of the Waterberg region.
Daily game drives take place in open air safari vehicles and typically last between one and two hours.
With over 100 species at Hippo Lakes (and counting), guests often see giraffes, zebras, antelope, hippos, monkeys, and a wide variety of birds moving through the reserve. There is also the possibility of encountering buffalo, rhino, leopard, and wild dog within the reserve.
Between outings, guests return to the lodges for meals, conversation, and time to rest before the next experience. Some afternoons include a second game drive, while others offer opportunities to join experiences such as bush walks, sundowners, or cultural excursions.
Because the reserve is private to Hippo Lakes guests, the experience remains calm and unhurried. The week gradually settles into the rhythm of the landscape, allowing guests to move between wildlife encounters, shared meals, and quiet moments overlooking the reserve.
Hippo Lakes is located in South Africa’s malaria-free Waterberg region, which makes it one of the more approachable safari destinations for international travelers. Guests typically fly into Johannesburg and continue on to the reserve with support from the Hippo Lakes team.
The region is known for strong weather year-round rather than a short travel season, which makes the safari experience appealing across much of the calendar.
Hippo Lakes offers two primary safari options, depending on how travelers prefer to plan their stay.

Wildlife sightings change from day to day, but the reserve consistently offers rich biodiversity to amaze you in new ways. Additional excursions to neighboring reserves offer the opportunity to see lions and elephants on a Big Game Drive.
UNBELIEVABLE! I knew I would enjoy the trip, but I wasn’t expecting this. I felt extremely safe, at home, and experienced nothing short of luxury. From meals to safaris to management, service was incredible.
The animals were, of course, remarkable! I felt as though I gained knowledge about each creature, due to the guides’ vast knowledge. The facilities were well kept and the food was DELICIOUS. I learned that a large amount of the produce is grown on the property and that solar energy is available in case of an outage, which can happen.
Safari travel comes with questions, and we want yours answered before you arrive. Below are some of the things guests ask most often. If something isn’t covered here, our team is happy to help.
Most days include at least one game drive, and often two. The rhythm of the week is shaped around the drives, with additional experiences woven in based on your preferences and the safari package selected.
The reserve is home to a diverse range of wildlife including giraffe, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, hyena, buffalo, sable, waterbuck, hippo, warthog, ostrich, civet, serval, and abundant birdlife throughout. Every drive is different — sightings depend on the season, time of day, and where the animals choose to be. For guests wanting to see lion and elephant, neighboring reserve excursions are available through the Big Game Drive experience.
Light layers for early morning drives when temperatures can be cooler, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a camera. Your ranger will advise on anything specific before you head out.
Completely. Your ranger will set the tone and guide the experience from start to finish. First-time guests are often the ones who find it most transformative — there is nothing quite like your first encounter with wildlife in the wild.
Yes. Let your ranger know ahead of time if there is a particular species or experience you are hoping for. They will do their best to plan the drive around your interests while letting the reserve take the lead.
